The Mistress

She sits beside you in the truck
She is waiting at home for you when you return
She is your best friend, your lover, your very Soul
She is your life blood, your water, your very breath

You need her, you want her, you crave her

She makes you happy when you are sad
She makes you feel when you feel nothing
She makes you numb when you feel too much
She is your inner voice, your scream, your confessor

You love her, hate her, you cannot live without her

She gazes at you longingly as you sit at the table
She whispers in your ear sweet nothings
She is your Siren, your lullaby, your dirge
She is your Life, your Eternity, your Death...

That very accurately describes what booze/drugs are like to an addict/alcoholic.

The comedian Richard Pryor, when describing what it was like to be addicted (this was after he burned himself up while freebasing cocaine) used to give his crack/ crack pipe a female persona and said that she used to whisper to him all the time: "Come on baby, what's one little hit gonna hurt, huh? Don't you know I love you?"...etc.

And I agree from my own experience so when I was reading this, it was the very first thing I thought of.

I hesitated posting this because it was one of those weird spontaneous things that seemed perhaps a little too simplistic. Today I was thinking about someone I know and the words just came. I had issues with the last line but then that song came to mind. My intention was for the ending to be a positive note, but not sure if it is taken that way.

I was actually thinking of sending it your way beforehand to get an honest opinion, so I am very glad for your comment.

Yea SG..no way I'd take that last line on a positive note. I emailed you because I posted about this subject and your poem ..I linked it because I did not have your permission to re-print but if you'd give it I'd probably put it in the post.

I thought this was very good, not simple at all. I'm glad you went ahead and posted it and didn't follow your hesitation...T

Awesome piece. It has that magical quality of good writing (poetry, song, ...) that lets us all read it and find what we need, find something that applies to our own situation. While I take something different than Thom from it, it still speaks to me in a very powerful way.
Thank You.

Okay, maybe "positive" note wasn't the right way to say it. Maybe more like a "kickintheass ifyoudon'tstop youaregoingtodie" note.

If you want to post it on your blog, you can.

Geesh, I just re-read my comment and it sounds sort of harsh. I should have put a stupid smiley face thing with it.

To have you say "speaks to me in a very powerful way." about something I wrote... I have no one word to describe it. Thank you.

(On a side note, I have been so wanting to write a comment on a couple of bits you have written in the last little while, but I just couldn't find the right words.)
