Have you ever heard

something so beautiful that it makes you cry ... and smile?

Not expecting to find that. I had gone searching for a link to a very touching love song which to my utter shock I found out was written by Bob Dylan. (Could you imagine him singing it? Me neither.)

Yep I sure can and it's a good version too. It's off Time Out Of Mind (1997) and that album won 3 Grammy's, that was the signature song from the album. Billy Joel and Garth Brooks have both covered this song too.

As much credit as Dylan gets, in a weird way he doesn't get it for the right reasons...like for writing a song like this on his 30th album or his ability to evoke so much emotion.

It's funny he really still has two careers: singer/musician/rock star and song writer. The first for obvious reasons but a song writer because so many people cover his stuff....and often do more popular versions. My favorite Dylan song is of a version he doesn't even do: Jimi Hendrix All Along The Watchtower.

Thanks for pointing this out SG...I think a bunch of people would be surprised to discover the songwriter of that song...

I don't think I ever thought of Bob Dylan as a singer... because... well... he couldn't really sing. But I knew he could write, even if I wasn't a huge fan. I'm not sure if I knew that he wrote All Along the Watchtower, but I do remember that being a favourite Hendrix song (something about the opening) from when I first heard it on vinyl way back in school.

Ya know, I avoided listening to Susan Boyle when she first hit the news, because I've got a stubborn contrarian streak.

This is the first time I've ever heard her.

Damn... just damn...

It's just impossible to believe that sound is coming out of a middle-aged, frumpy, British housewife.

Every bit as startling as listening to Jackie Evancho:

(skip to 1:15 on that & get to the music)

Ah... so you're a member of the contrarian club too?

I don't watch tv or the "news", so when I come across these things, it's nice and fresh. I loved seeing everyone's expressions when they initially saw the frumpy hausfrau come on stage and start talking. Glad you watched it.

Hadn't heard the little girl before, but for some reason it didn't quite have the same effect. Even though she has a wonderful voice, it just seemed forced or pushed, almost like Gwyneth Paltrow.

I think my comment needs clarification. I said "wonderful", which doesn't do her voice justice. It is an amazing voice, timbre, tone... to come out of this little kid, and with such ease, but it just seems... unnatural.
