Methinks a beetle got it.
A blaze of colour was a surprise and a nice change. Some landscaping was done in the area after a massive windstorm knocked down several of the tall evergreens a few years back.
It does make for a very pleasant splash of colour - should have said that right off.
We've had some beetle infestations eating up the evergreens around here, and my immediate experience crowded out the aethestics of the picture :)
